Let's Go Fly a Kite

These are just a few ideas for a character for the next animated short at BYU.

These are great designs. I think the slightly insulting caricature works well for what I've heard of the story, too. Like not only does the kid not want to play with grandpa, grandpa's a doofus.

They are fun designs. Remember what Ralph Eggleston said about what an animated short needs? Brevity. Clarity. Sincerity. I feel like these designs fulfull two of those requirements, but they lack sincerity. A story with heavy cultural involvement deserves to be seen from its own paradigm, and not ours, or else I fear we'll just end up mocking our own character. And that's fine if it's not a character we're supposed to feel for. But I want to be able to feel for the grandpa, and classic chinese stereotypes are only a barrier to that kind of connection.

But man do they look good. You're so gonna get into a big studio, Andy.

i think this fits the character well...i imagined the grampa as being way goofy, and with those big glasses, the teeth and his body shape, you really pulled it off!
